UK Government Working To Remove PCR Testing For International Travellers

The United Kingdom (UK) government has said it is working to remove PCR testing for international travellers.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has been speaking to the Transport Committee to discuss travel rules.

He says the government is working as “quickly as possible” to remove PCR testing for international travellers but he is not able to give an exact date when they would be lifted.

However, he says his colleagues in the Department of Health are “aware of half term”, when families may be wishing to go on holiday. He said:

It’s clear the range of measures I introduced this week and last week are going to make a big difference and people will be able to travel much more freely.

Part of that is the removal of the PCR test on day two and replacing it with a much simpler lateral flow test.

The UK government earlier this year announced that individuals needed to have proof of a negative COVID-19 test to travel to England from abroad.

This could include tests such as a PCR test; a LAMP test; an antigen test, and or an LFD (lateral flow device) test.

But International travel rules for England are to be simplified, scrapping the green and amber list in favour of a single red list from 4 October.

Under new testing guidelines, people who are fully vaccinated will no longer need to take a pre-departure test before leaving any country, not on the red list.

And, later in October, returning travellers will be able to replace the day two PCR test with a cheaper lateral flow test.
