The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on last Friday 13 August impounded two buses that were carrying smuggled goods.

In a statement, the police said the drivers of the buses have since been arrested for smuggling and violating COVID-19 regulations. Said the police:

On 13/08/21, Police in Mashava impounded 2 buses, (MVI Coaches bus and Clarity Coaches bus) and arrested the drivers for smuggling and contravening COVID-19 regulations.

The 2 buses were intercepted at a traffic checkpoint at the 41km peg along Masvingo-Mbalabala Rd, with smuggled goods worth approximately ZAR 150 000. One of the buses had 18 passengers while the other one had 3 passengers.

In April, an official in the National Security Taskforce said between March 1 and April 28, they intercepted 54 buses carrying an assortment of smuggled goods worth over US$20 million.

The Taskforce was deployed on January 5 at the recommendation of the National Joint Operations Committee (JOC) following numerous reports of smuggling and other criminal activities at the country’s border with South Africa.

Reports of smuggling have been on the rise since the closure of borders to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
