Guinea Coup Attempt: US, France, AU, UN Demand Release Of President Condé

The international community is calling for the release of Guinea President Alpha Condé who was Sunday detained by the special forces earlier on Sunday.

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who has reportedly been identified as the head of the action, announced the dissolution of the government, suspension of the constitution and the closure of the country’s borders.

Amateur videos have been circulating on social media showing President Condé among soldiers, with the country’s capital Conakry filled with troops.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday condemned the coup attempt in Guinea and called for the release of President Alpha Condé. Guterres tweeted:

I am personally following the situation in Guinea very closely. I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Condé..

The African Union (A.U.) has also called for the immediate release of President Conde and also condemned the military action against the government by special forces. The continental body said in a press release:

The current President of the African Union H.E. Félix Tshisekedi and the Chairman of the African Union Commission H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat condemn any seizure of power by force and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Condé..

They invite the Peace and Security Council of the African Union to meet urgently to examine the new situation in Guinea and to take appropriate measures in the circumstances.

Through the voice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France has condemned the coup attempt in Guinea and demands the “immediate” release of President Condé.

The United States has also condemned events on Sunday in the Guinean capital Conakry, saying violence and any extra-constitutional measures would only erode Guinea’s prospects for peace, stability and prosperity. Read a statement by the U.S. State Department:

The United States condemns today’s events in Conakry. These actions could limit the ability of the United States and Guinea’s other international partners to support the country as it navigates a path toward national unity and a brighter future for the Guinean people.

Col. Doumbouya said the army had been forced to act because of poverty, endemic corruption, abuse of power and a lack of respect for democratic principles. The announcement followed heavy gunfire near the presidential palace in the capital Conakry.

Condé who has been in power since 2010 triggered anger when he amended the constitution to allow himself to run for a third term. He was reelected in October 2020.
