Messi had accepted a salary cut to stay at the club he joined at age 13, for whom he made his competitive debut aged 17 in October 2004.
He played in one of Barcelona's strongest teams that consisted of the likes of Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, which went to win a number of cups in both the domestic league and Europe.
Iniesta, a Spanish central midfielder who now plays for Vissel Kobe which is in the J1 League, the top division of the Japan Professional Football League, is now failing to come to terms with the new development. He said:
We spent 14 years together, we experienced many moments (some were magical and others were rough) but we always stayed together. Imagining the club without you or the possibility of seeing you at Camp Nou wearing another jersey is very difficult. Good luck, Leo!
Reports suggest that Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain are the two teams that can afford to sign the services of the Argentinian captain.
